On Sunday, I have my spring choir concert.  We are singing a medley of music from Phantom of the Opera, and it sounds just wonderful.  Despite that, I really don’t like the choir concerts at my school.  They are sooooo long.  There are six full choirs ranging from very beginning community choirs (3) to the advanced choirs (3 – including my choir).  And two of the community choirs always go over their time limit, with music I really don’t like…  One of the advanced choirs is a women’s choir, which I also don’t like much – mens and mixed choirs sound much better, but I’ll admit they are really good.

This semester, the “mini-musical” we are singing in choir is Phantom of the Opera.  (Yay!)  But, this is one of the few times I don’t like singing alto, ’cause from the musicxal/movie I’ve picked up the soprano (meledy) line, and so now I have to learn a funky harmony.  Anyway, tomorrow the guys are auditioning for their solos – Phantom and Raoul.  Then on Thursday we can audition for Christine and Meg.  I thought about trying for Meg, but have since decided thats probably a bad idea.

For now, I am sitting next to this one lady who apparently has a nice voice, but she absolutely can’t read music (the choir director is hoping that I’ll be able to help, thats why she is sitting next to me).  She is nice enough, but is it really that hard to figure out that there are four staffs (staves?) per line, or simpler still, follow the lyrics?  Well, we’ll see… Oh, also in choir this semester is someone I’ve gone to school with since 2nd grade.  He is a good bass singer; and, we can always use more guys in the class.

Today in choir, we had a college barbershop quartet visiting from Sweden.  They were wonderful.  Here is their website:  Or, you can just watch this video of them singing Blackbird.  Enjoy!

Caroling on Campus

December 4, 2008 at 6:21 pm (Fall 2008, School) (, , )

Choir was fun this morning. For our dress rehearsal, we went around campus (the liberary, registration, the commons, the cafateria, the gym, and one of the dorms) singing some of our Christmas music. It was really fun. Or rather the first several stops were fun. After a while it got a little boring singing the same music over and over again. But over all, I think it was a fun way to end the semester.

What’s not so fun is the amount of homework I have to do before Saturday… I have 3 quizes, a report to finish, a paper, 2 reviews, 2 labs, and a powerpoint. If getting it done weren’t so stressful, it would be interesting to note how homework seems to go in waves; some weeks I’ll have nothing and other weeks (like this) I have no idea how I’ll get everything done. It doesn’t help that I’m ready to get the Christmas decorations out… I think I can get to that on Sunday, but maybe not till Wednesday. Oh well…

Buy This CD

November 14, 2008 at 9:26 pm (Fall 2008, Fun Stuff) (, , , )

If you’ve spent much time on you tube, its likely you’ve heard of Indiana University’s Straight No Chaser, a mens acapella choir.  Well this year for their tenth anniversary, they made a reunion Christmas CD.  Its really good, and well worth the few dollars it costs.

So yeah…. you should go get a copy of Straight No Chaser’s Holiday Spirits.

Choir Auditions

November 6, 2008 at 11:45 pm (Fall 2008, School) (, , )

Today in choir we were auditioning for 8 slots to sing the National Anthem for the president of the college and some other people next week.  Well, out of the 12 altos, I was one of two picked.  This was very exciting – mostly cause some of the people who weren’t selected are in more advanceed choirs than I and have more experience in choir.

So anyway, on Tuesday, we are driving across the county (about an hour), singing the National Anthem, and driving back…  It ok though, cause it is a nice arrangement.

Christmas Music

October 21, 2008 at 9:36 pm (Fall 2008, Life, School) (, , , , )

I do love Christmas music; it is just so much fun.  Especially when you play christmas music like this:

But thats a different story…  This time of year choirs, orchestras, and bands all over begin to rehears their holiday music. And it really is just so much fun. In choir, we’ve started working on of christmas music, and the whole choir just seems so much more lively and festive.

Choir Festival

September 28, 2008 at 1:41 am (Fall 2008, School) (, )

Yesterday, the music department hosted a choir festival for several high schools in the area.  The high schools brought their choirs who each sang for a choir directors’ review and advice.  Then, each choir performed their best piece.  It was a lot of fun, and was a good dress rehearsal for my choir’s performance in October.

5 weeks down… 11 to go…

Choir Class

September 2, 2008 at 8:04 pm (Fall 2008, School) (, , , )

My new choir class is wonderful.  Its at a better time, the people are closer to my age, and the music is so much more fun.

We are singing a medley from Fiddler on the Roof, Shenandoah, A Consort of Choral Christmas Carols by PDQ Bach, Go Tell it on the Mountain, I Saw Three Ships, and Still Still Still.  So it looks like a good collection of pieces.
