The Station Fire

August 30, 2009 at 9:49 pm (Life) (, , , , )

I guess as an Emergency Management student, I should probably mention something about the Station Fire in southern California.

Ok, so for anyone who hasn’t been watching the news, here is a brief overview.

The Station Fire is a 35,000+ acre in the San Gabriel Mountains just north of Los Angeles.  It is less than 5% contained.

Two fire fighters were killed today; their names have not been released.

18 structures have been destroyed; 12,000 more homes are threatened (the area threatened includes Pasadena and northern LA).

The historic solar observatory on Mt. Wilson is being threatened.  Mt. Wilson also has numerous cell, radio, and television antennas.  If the fire reaches Mt. Wilson most radios, TVs and cell phones in the LA area will stop working; this may prove very dangerous if more evacuations must be ordered.

The Linda Blair WorldHeart Foundation is managing animal evacuations.  They need crates donated to transport animals out of the fire’s path.  They also need foster homes for the pets of the thousands of evacuated families.  Their website is here.

As always during emergencies, the Red Cross need volunteers and donations.  Also, even if you mean well, and are trying to help, stay out of the area unless you are an official volunteer for one of the responding organizations.  Your attempt to help could actually cause more problems than it helps.

Web cam from Altadena, CA here.

Webcam from on top of Mt. Wilson, here. (due to the fire, this camera keeps going down)

Finally, a couple pictures

New Feature – Restaurants

August 28, 2009 at 11:23 pm (Fun Stuff, Life, Restaurant Reviews) (, , )

My mom wanted me to add a new feature to my blog.  Restaurant Reviews.  While my home away from home has a fridge, there is no way to heat up food, so I eat out for almost every meal while I’m there.

Domino’s Pizza – I love that I can place an order online and have it delivered.  Beyond that, it is some of the worst fast food pizza (which is saying a lot, because I usually like fast food pizza).

The Wild Thaiger – Simply excellent thai food (I had the chicken curry and deep fried tofu, but there are a lot of other things on the menu that looked good).  The fried tofu was battered which was a little odd, but the curry was yummy.  Maybe not the safest parking lot (its secluded behind the building), but the other customers seemed to be fairly upstanding.

Subway – My old standby.  Its great on the drive down.

Sweet Tomatoes – Fine tasting food, but wayyyy overpriced.

Sui Wok – Just your usual chinese food.  I had the sesame chicken with rice.  It tasted good, but wasn’t anything exceptional.

Quiznos – Turkey, bacon, avocado sandwich.  It was ok, but has nothing on my beloved Subway.  Service was kinda lame (the guy got really confused when I said I didn’t want cheese… sorry, but I don’t like cheese on my sandwiches…

Paper Heart, starring Michael Cera (Juno)

All About Steve, starring Sandra Bullock

The Invention of Lying, starring Ricky Gervais (Ghosttown)

Rain and Crazy People

August 25, 2009 at 1:07 pm (Life) (, )

Yay! Its raining.

So this morning, there were two guys here (I couldn’t tell is they were on this side of the property line – except when one guy was leaning on the fence…).  Anyway, they apparently were bringing down a couple trees, not surprising in itself, but their method was a little more unusual…  From what I could see, they were tying a tow strap around the tree and onto their pickup truck, and then backing up the truck…

Now they are back with a backhoe. What are they doing?!?!?!?! I am genuinely concerned that when I get home on Thursday the fence (or worse the hill the fence is built on) will not be intact!!!

Not my day…

August 24, 2009 at 3:01 pm (Life) (, )

9am – Wake up
10am – leave the house to go to a meeting with my school advisor
10:10 – Truck overturned in the road.. no one hurt, but blocking the road
10:28 – Pulling into the school (almost late), some guy points out my back tire is flat (and my parents just happen to be out of town today)
10:29 – Text a friend who just happens to be planning to be on campus this morning
10:30 – Go to meeting (on time!)
11:30 – Finish meeting, go to text friend and notice cell battery is dead
11:35 – Find friends, put spare tire on car
12:00 – Drive to tire place, on the way I plugged in my phone and ipod into the nifty new power strip I had repaired and reinstalled in my car on Friday… apparently it overloaded the fuse  (in other words… I don’t have a power source for my phone, gps, or ipod when I drive to phoenix… and while my ipod has a speaker in it, I have to keep the windows down ’cause there is no AC, and I can’t hear it over the wind…)
1pm – Leave tire place with nicely repaired tire
1:15 – Get lunch
1:30 – Go home

Today and a Movie Review

August 23, 2009 at 11:32 pm (Blogs, Fun Stuff)

Tonight my knee hurts.  I misplaced my brace sometime yesterday, and I can tell…

Today I worked long and hard on the blog for my dad’s program this fall.  There isn’t a lot of content at the moment, but you can expect it to pick up considerably starting this week.  Anyway, check it out 🙂 http://acentaursjourney.wordpress.com/

Ok, now to the fun stuff.  Tonight I went out with two of my closest friends before they head back to school this week.  We went to see PostGrad.  It was really cute and really funny.

It has a wonderful cast… Alexis Bledel (Gilmore Girls/Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants), Jane Lynch (guest star in Psych), Bobby Coleman (the really cute little boy who guest starred in In Plain Sight), to name a few.  Great characters, fun story, very worth seeing.

Blogging for Charity

August 23, 2009 at 12:18 pm (Fun Stuff, Issues, Life) (, , )

If you look at my side bar, you may notice a new button called SocialVibe.  If you click on it (you can click every day), it will show you a video thats about 30 seconds long.  After watching the video, rate it, and a sponsor will make a donation to a charity (for the time being, I have chosen the Waleman Foundation, which works to bring Whales and Mankind together to preserve and protect our World).  So, please take a couple seconds to watch this video.

I could get used to this…

August 18, 2009 at 9:45 pm (Fall 2009, Fun Stuff, Life, School) (, , )

Well, tomorrow is day two of my internship.  I can’t say anything about it.  But so far it is incredible!  The people I’m working with are really nice and the work is really interesting.  I have wanted to work here for a really long time, but have had some doubts that I could do the work.  But so far, I’ve seen how much this really is what I want to be doing.  So, we’ll see…

Anyway, I’m driving to Phoenix every Tuesday, staying a couple days, and then heading back home.  So today was the first time at this place.  And I think I have found the closest you can get to bliss in Phoenix.  The hotel itself is a little funky (they advertise as not being a tan chain hotel, and they aren’t).

Because I’m renting a room from them every week for nearly 6 months, they are giving me a King-sized suite at an incredibly discounted rate.  The bed is super comfy and there is a big flat screen tv.  And the pool.  At 8:30/9pm (maybe even later, its open until midnight, but I have to be up early in the morning) it is perfect.  There are very few people (one guy swimming laps and another on his computer in the lounge area), the water is warm from the sun beating on it all day.  But the sun has set, so no worries about sunburn, no need for sunscreen, its perfect.  And there are little LEDs at the bottom of the pool which is a fun touch.  I spent probably 10 minutes just floating on my back watching the stars and planes (I almost fell asleep like that, it was so nice…)

So far there have only been three real problems.  The heat here is killer.  110 degrees today.  It wouldn’t be so bad if it weren’t for problem two, car trouble.  The AC in the car doesn’t work.  And the little plug in the car doesn’t work (so no ipod, no charging my phone in the car, sigh…).  Problem three is the limited food options.  “Imitation” pizza (fast food pizza from a popular chain) just doesn’t cut it when you want fresh fruit 😦

Anyway, I’m off to bed before another great day tomorrow…

One of those days…

August 15, 2009 at 8:57 am (Life, School, Summer 2009) (, , , )

Today is one of those days where everything starts off great. Then gets steadily worse. And, its not even 9am yet……………………………………

Maybe tomorrow will be better……..

Though I am working on a cake today that should be fun.  Writing an essay and cleaning my room – not so fun.
